The Oklahoma Sooners have the No. 1 class in the 2027 recruiting cycle, but they would love to keep that momentum going in 2028.
To start their 2027 recruiting class, the Oklahoma Sooners primarily focused on offensive line. Cooper Hackett and Kaeden Penny were two of their first commits, and it’s worked out well. They have the No. 1 class in the 2027 recruiting cycle.
In the 2026 class, they focused on guys like Noah Best and Deacon Schmitt early. Michael Fasusi wasn’t the first commit, but he was early and helped build momentum. While they don’t yet have a commitment for the 2028 recruiting class, it feels like there’s already an early emphasis on the offensive line. Earlier this week, the Sooners sent out an offer to an offensive lineman in the 2028 recruiting class.

Maui Walter Tonata, an IOL in Utah, is the Sooners’ fifth IOL offer in the 2028 class, behind three four stars and a guy who’s not yet ranked. However, Tonata is the highest-ranked IOL of the bunch. OU is historically known for its development of OL, which could be one of the many reasons why Tonata was so excited to receive the offer.

Tonata has the makings of a potential five-star rating in the future
The Sooners seem like the perfect fit for Tonata. He’s a big, strong interior offensive lineman who’s also very athletic. That’s what Ben Arbuckle, Bill Bedenbaugh, and Brent Venables love on the inside.

The 6′,5, 315-pound OL loves getting up the field. At Orem HS in Utah, Tonata was asked to do many pin-and-guard pulls in that offense. It allowed him to really explode into that second level, and he even has some clips of him running with the RB into the third level. It’s clear watching his tape that he can move, but there may not be anything he loves more than pancaking someone.
Tonata has offers from a ton of schools, but the ones leading the charge right now are Nebraska, BYU, Utah, Cal, and Arizona. I think we could see OU get into that mix very soon.
