The West Virginia basketball team landed another power 5 transfer on Sunday. St. John’s transfer guard Joson Sanon committed to the Mountaineers, per On3.

“The 6-5 sophomore averaged nearly 8 points per game this season and is a career 35% three-point shooter,” Joe Tipton posted to X, formerly Twitter.
Sanon is part of a large group of transfers headed to Morgantown in 2026, that already includes another Big East transfer. Guard Finley Bizjack from Butler announced he is playing for West Virginia as well in 2026-27.
Other transfers for West Virginia include: Florida State guard Martin Somerville, Georgia Tech center Mo Sylla, Utah forward Seydou Traore and Boise State forward Javan Buchanan.
The Mountaineers finished the 2025-26 campaign missing the NCAA tournament, under first-year head coach Ross Hodge. West Virginia played instead in the College Basketball Crown Tournament in Las Vegas. WVU won that tournament after defeating Stanford, Creighton and Oklahoma.

Before playing at St. John’s, Sanon also played at Arizona State.

West Virginia is overhauling nearly the entire roster from the 2025-26 team. The Mountaineers lost several players to the transfer portal this offseason, including freshman forward DJ Thomas. Several other players including guard Honor Huff are out of eligibility.

Leading the way heading into next season is incoming freshman star guard Miles Sadler. Sadler is considered one of the top high school prospects in America. He is ranked as the no. 26 prospect nationally in the 2026 class, per Rivals.
West Virginia is led by head coach Ross Hodge. Hodge won 21 games during his first season in Morgantown, in 2025-26. He previously was the head coach at North Texas.
