HPU ROUNDUP: HPU wins men’s, women’s conference track titles

HIGH POINT — High Point University added two more conference titles to its impressive run this school year.

The Panthers swept both the men’s and women’s titles for the sixth straight year to cap the Big South Conference track and field championships Monday through Wednesday at Vert Stadium.

The men totaled 263.5 points while the women had 269 points — staying ahead of second-place Charleston Southern with 167 points for the men and 247 for the women.

Camerin Williams (men’s 800, 1:49.05), Gavin Stevens (men’s 1500, 3:45.67), Dominiq Northington (men’s 110 hurdles, 14.04), Andrew Noblet (men’s javelin, 64.67m), Shaun Thomas (men’s high jump, 2.09m), Ricardo Montes de Oca (men’s pole vault, 5.50m), Justin Sluijter (men’s long jump, 7.48m), Cole Wilson (decathlon, 7777.00) and the men’s 4×400 (3:09.08) won events for the men.

Zamesha Myle (women’s 100, 11.46; women’s 200, 23.11), Brianna Malone (women’s 1500, 4:23.51; women’s 5000, 17:01.01), Ashlyn Giles (women’s shot put, 16.52m), Vanessa Kobialka (women’s discus, 52.89m), Moriah Evans (women’s javelin, 47.53m), Emily Romano (women’s pole vault, 4.18m) and the women’s 4×100 (44.60) won events for the women.

Wilson earned the Most Outstanding Performance, while Nigel Steenwinkel was the Co-Newcomer of the Year on the men’s side. Myle was the Newcomer of the Year on the women’s side. High Point earned Coaching Staff of the Year for both the men and the women.

The Panthers have totaled 11 conference championships in 15 sports this school year.

HPU WOMEN’S GOLF COMPETES IN REGIONAL

CHAPEL HILL — High Point University finished ninth in the NCAA’s Chapel Hill women’s golf regional Monday through Wednesday at UNC Finley Golf Club.

The Panthers, playing in a regional as a team for the first time after winning the Big South Conference, shot 300-290-289-879.

Texas won the 12-team event with a 279-271-285-835, followed by North Carolina at 274-280-292-846 as the two qualifiers for the national tournament.

Princeton’s Thanana Kotchasanmanee (66-72-66) and Oklahoma State’s Marta Silchenko (70-68-66) tied for medalist at 204 and advanced as well.

Anna Howerton (T32, 73-73-73-219), Makayla Grubb (T32, 75-69-75-219), Anais Arafi (T37, 76-74-71-221) and Eva Lye (T40, 78-74-70) finished in the top 50 for High Point.

HPU BASEBALL’S OLSOVSKY AWARDED CHRISTENBERRY AWARD

CHARLOTTE — High Point University baseball player Dalton Olsovsky has earned the Big South Conference’s George A. Christenberry Award for Academic Excellence, joining a league-record 14 student-athletes with the highest GPA.

Olsovsky finished with a 4.00 GPA and has passed the Securities Industrial Essentials exam en route to earning his finance degree.

Olsovsky, who is from Keller, Texas, has appeared in 32 games for the Panthers in three years with the program. He’s made eight starts and had the most impact his freshman season when the Panthers won their first Big South Conference Tournament in program history.

He has a career 5-5 record with 55 strikeouts in 56.1 innings pitched.
