Adam Chaney Notches Win in 50 Freestyle at Sun Devil Open; Marie Wattel Victorious
Coming off a strong finish to his collegiate career at the NCAA Championships, Arizona State’s Adam Chaney claimed victory in the 50-meter freestyle during Friday night’s action at the Sun Devil Open. Chaney picked up the win behind a time of 22.10, which was a quarter-second clear of Jonny Kulow, the runnerup in 22.36. Patrick Sammon was another half-second back, placing third in 22.84.
In March, Chaney was a member of four Arizona State relays that captured NCAA championships, efforts that propelled the Sun Devils to fourth place in the team standings. That success carried over into the Sun Devil Open, which is being used as a prep meet for the upcoming summer. Chaney is expected to race the 50 backstroke and 100 backstroke on Saturday, based on psych sheets for the meet.
On the women’s side, France’s Marie Wattel touched the wall in 25.28 to win the 50 freestyle, with countrywoman Albane Cachot placing second in 25.51. Wattel and Cachot are expected to contend for berths to the European Championships when France holds its qualifying meet later this summer.
ASU’s Andy Dobrzanski put together a strong performance in the 50 breaststroke, winning the event in 27.64. That mark was enough to beat Lucien Vergnes (27.77) and Brayden Taivassalo (27.86), who also broke the 28-second barrier. Meanwhile, J.T. Ewing was the top finisher in the 200 individual medley, going 2:04.61.
