UFC’s Juan Diaz explains why Davey Grant is next opponent choice

by

Juan Diaz is willing to fight anyone, anywhere, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have preferences.

Diaz (16-1-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who had a successful UFC debut earlier this month, would like to avenge his teammate Adrian Luna Martinetti and fight UFC veteran Davey Grant. Diaz sees the potential of a good fight between the two, given both’s styles. He also wouldn’t mind Louis Jourdain, who joined the UFC around the same time late last year.

“There’s a lot of competition, and now that you mention it, one name comes to mind: the guy who beat my teammate Adrian Luna two weeks ago – Davey Grant,” Diaz told Hablemos MMA in Spanish. “Only because he beat my teammate. He, or another name I like, is a guy who fought in Contender a week before I did; it was Charles Jourdain’s brother (Louis Jourdain). He’s good. Those two interest me. Let’s see if it happens; if not, whatever the company decides. You know ‘Pegajoso’ fights anyone.”

Diaz made his octagon debut on the main card of UFC Fight Night 276. He had a more difficult debut than most, as he was matched up against highly-touted prospect Malcolm Wellmaker (10-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC). Despite entering as a big underdog, Diaz dominated and submitted Wellmaker. He also pocketed an extra $100,000 winning a Performance of the Night bonus.

“In almost every one of my fights, I’m the underdog – even in the other promotions (prior to UFC). So when I win, I surprise people, and I just keep surprising and surprising people. Nobody had confidence in me, and I proved I could do it. That whole week, I felt very confident. I was well-trained, and everything went well. Training was good. Fight week was good, I enjoyed it a lot. The weight was easy. I was excited walking out to fight. I had no nerves. It was just another fight for me, and I think you saw that in the result.”
