SEC leaders are having open discussions around whether the conference should govern itself. Proposals for independent operation stem from growing frustration with the NCAA. The association has struggled to find viable solutions for the chaos surrounding NIL and the transfer portal.
During SEC spring meetings, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart voiced support for the SEC creating and enforcing its own rules. Smart and other coaches are seeking a national standard of enforcement, specifically in college football. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said conference-led regulation is on the table if federal legislation continues to stall.

Inconsistent enforcement across college athletics has sparked resentment as roster management becomes more and more perplexing in the NIL era.
“I’ve said this for a long time to our president, I’ve been a huge advocate that if we can’t find rules that everybody plays by, then we should play on our own,” Smart said. “I’m not afraid of that. I’m not afraid to break away and say that our conference is strong enough to go out and play.”
Florida may be uniquely positioned in a model that is SEC-centric, given the financial advantages of the conference along with its recruiting footprint and brand recognition.
