Jose Fernandez’s Dallas Wings have been the talk of the town ever since they picked Azzi Fudd first in the WNBA draft. This was the second year in a row that they had the first draft pick. Before Azzi, they drafted Paige Bueckers. Despite her Rookie of the Year winning season, the Wings had one of the worst seasons in WNBA history.
After a 10-34 season, Chris Koclanes was fired and the Wings welcomed Jose Fernandez. As the WNBA season started, there were a lot of doubts and many questions for Fernandez to navigate through. A wave of controversy hit the Wings, when Fernandez publicly called out his team for being “selfish.”

People demanded Azzi Fudd’s spot in the starting lineup. Head coach Jose sternly stood his ground and wanted Azzi to earn her spot. Another aspect of the Wings team that caused a bit of discomfort was the questions around Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd’s relationship. Paige publicly admitted wanting to keep things private. Throughout the season, Wings have been getting a huge amount of engagement online. When asked about that type of attention, Jose Fernandez had a hilarious response.
The reporter asked if Jose was surprised to see the level of fan engagement for his team. He slyly stared and said with a chuckle, “Surprised? No. I don’t know. What’s my public rating today?” The reporters laughed after his hilarious question. “Because it fluctuates. You know I get a lot of questionable text messages sent to me. And I just laugh. But it’s alright. I’m fine,” he added.
