Texas Tech football sparked national conversations with the Brendan Sorsby fallout. Head coach Joey McGuire has a mess on his hands. But that led to sympathy from a past Red Raiders rival: Mack Brown.

The 2006 national championship winning head coach for Texas spoke out about the situation. Sorsby is eligible to play amid his gambling controversy but must sit out two games. But Brown sees McGuire in a tough spot, leading to him feeling for the coach.

“I feel for Joey McGuire because he’s got a mess,” McGuire said via The Stampede Podcast. “Because it’s not really his decision. He got a lot of bosses telling him what to do.”

Indeed this is the toughest challenge yet for the reigning Big 12 champion coach. Sorsby arrived as a coveted College Football Transfer Portal addition via Cincinnati. The dual-threat passer’s arrival to Lubbock reignited College Football Playoff chatter. Plus got Red Raiders fans envisioning the program making their first-ever national title run.

Except now he must console a quarterback dealing with a reported gambling addiction. Sorsby landed in hot water with the NCAA after it was revealed he placed live bets on college football games.

Texas Tech and McGuire have come under fire nationally for their handling of Sorsby. Fox college football analyst Joel Klatt is one fierce critic of the ruling.

“Brendan Sorsby being ruled eligible to play next fall in college football is devastating to the sport,” Klatt said Tuesday.
