Texas football is just 85 days away and we’ve made our way back to another “Flashback Friday”, where we break down a legendary player from the last championship team in 2005. Last week, it was about the grit and toughness of Justin Blalock on the offensive line. This week, it’s about the world-class playmaking ability of Michael Huff. The Texas legend and College Football Hall of Famer is one of the main reasons for the 2005 championship.
There is an argument Huff made the two of the three biggest plays in the 2005 Rose Bowl vs. USC. The All-American jumped on the Reggie Bush fumble early in the second half and then later was a major part of stonewalling LenDale White on 4th and 1, earning himself defensive MVP. He was a special player throughout the season but, like Vince Young, he saved his best for last.
He also led the team off the field, being one of the senior captains. Huff’s leadership didn’t leave the Forty Acres for long, as he’s been around the program during the Sarkisian era. Having someone of Huff’s caliber is so important for the team as whole, but particularly someone like Jelani McDonald. If there’s anyone that can be the Michael Huff of the 2026 Texas Longhorns, it’s McDonald. If he matches Huff’s 2005, he’ll likely join Huff(and many other Longhorns) as a Thorpe Award Winner.
There are multiple components to a championship team. Blalock last week represented the “nastiness” and intensity you need. Michael Huff represents the remarkable defensive playmaking that is a true requirement for a title. Now, I can’t say any Longhorns defensive back will match what Huff did in 2005, but there’s no shortage of playmakers in the back end and they have No. 7 in the building to learn from.

Michael Huff is synonymous with Texas football. He is the consummate professional that showed up every Saturday ready to give everything he had. The physical ability is a given at this level of football. What changes teams is the mental makeup and if this Texas team can learn from his example, they could be on their way to joining Huff in the hall of champions.
