Questions have emerged about De’Aaron Fox’s long-term role with the San Antonio Spurs following his struggles in the NBA Finals and the rapid rise of rookie guard Dylan Harper.
However, league insiders do not expect San Antonio to move on from its veteran point guard.
Speaking on SportsCenter, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said the Spurs remain committed to Fox despite growing speculation about the team’s backcourt future.
“I know there’s a lot of interesting in whether they might do something with De’Aaron Fox, but they are committed to him right now as their franchise point guard,” Windhorst said. “And I think they will remain that way.”
San Antonio acquired Fox before the 2025 trade deadline and later signed him to a four-year, $229 million contract extension.
Shortly afterward, the Spurs landed the No. 2 pick in the draft lottery and selected Harper, creating one of the league’s most intriguing young guard groups alongside Stephon Castle.
Despite concerns about fit and playing time, financial considerations are not currently forcing the issue.
With Harper, Castle, and Victor Wembanyama all still on rookie-scale contracts through at least the 2027-28 season, the Spurs have ample flexibility to keep Fox on the roster.
Fox, who is represented by Rich Paul, remains under contract through 2030.
One of the biggest questions entering next season is how San Antonio will balance minutes among its talented young guards.
Harper impressed during his rookie campaign and is viewed by many as a future star, though it remains unclear whether he will continue coming off the bench.
Fox also dealt with injury challenges during the playoffs, suffering a high ankle sprain in the second round before returning for Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals.
For now, all signs point toward the Spurs moving forward with Fox, Harper, and Castle together as they continue building around Wembanyama and their young core.
