Amil (11-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) looks to get back to his winning ways after dropping back-to-back outings against Jose Delgado and Jamall Emmers. Those were the first pair of losses in his professional career. His last win was a split decision over William Gomis last March.

Rodriguez (12-4 MMA, 5-4 UFC) has also dropped two straight, losing to Melquizael Costa and Andre Fili. His last win was a unanimous nod over Austin Bashi last January.

Filling out the main card for UFC Fight Night 279 is another potential featherweight firefight between Christian Rodriguez and Hyder Amil.
Rodriguez, who has been out of action for the last year since the unfortunate passing of his beloved coach Duke Roufus, has followed his manager and friend, Anthony Pettis, out to Las Vegas to set up shop at Xtreme Couture MMA.

Although Rodriguez is in good hands, I can’t help but think about the eerie trend of UFC fighters who have gone on losing slumps after losing their head coaches in such permanent manners (e.g. the stables of Shawn Tompkins, Robert Follis, Saul Soliz, etc.).
The silver lining, however, is that Amil is the type of fighter who will both bring excitement to the card, as well as potentially bring out the best in Rodriguez.
When zooming out and looking over Rodriguez’s resume, the former Roufusport fighter traditionally does his best work when aggressive fighters force him to work. And despite Amil being a solid underdog who will fight for your money, I fear that his aggression will only give Rodriguez his needed takedown outs inside the smaller cage.
The pick is for Rodriguez to edge out the scorecards of a fight I see being competitive from start to finish.
