No, the USA and England still won’t play July 4. Here’s who might

Now that group stages are complete and FIFA World Cup games are moving into the Round of 32, we officially know who will be in the running to play Philadelphia’s July 4 game.

To much dismay, England and the USA won’t be playing a 250-year rematch on the anniversary of the United States’ independence after the teams’ groupings and performance didn’t align with the already-established tournament fixtures.

What teams will play in Philly on July 4, FIFA World Cup

The July 4 game at Philadelphia Stadium is scheduled for the winners of Match 74 and Match 77:

  • Match 74: Germany (E) v. Paraguay (D), 4:30 p.m. at Boston Stadium – June 29

  • Match 77: France (I) v. Sweden (F), 5:00 p.m. at New York New Jersey Stadium – June 30

Germany and France both won the title in their respective World Cup groups, while their opponents, Paraguay and Sweden, were third place pool picks from opposing groups (noted above).
