Sophie Cunningham’s latest statement on the 2026 Phoenix Mercury squad has caught fire in the WNBA world. The Mercury and the Indiana Fever played back-to-back games and tied the season series 1-1. After edging out the Fever in a close game, the team added its seventh win of the season against the Toronto Tempo. However, Cunningham highlighted a serious issue in the locker room. And WNBA analyst Meghan L. Hall berated her for her take.
The Fever lost to the Mercury 111-109, in which Caitlin Clark moved to the locker room after playing 20 minutes due to her recurring back issues. While Cunningham could score just five points off the bench, she revealed a big internal issue in Phoenix. During her latest conversation on Show Me Something Sophie Cunningham & West Wilson, the Fever forward claimed:
“They say that they’re the unfriendliest group. So we’re not the only ones who feel that way. Internal people feel that way too.”
However, WNBA analyst Hall did not take Cunningham’s take lightly and shared her thoughts on the statement:
“Goodness gracious. I —
1) This is wildly unprofessional.
2) How is this helping with the *points at everything* current discourse?
3) There is not any scenario that exists where a player should be saying this about any organization.”
Sophie Cunningham is one of the most controversial figures in the league. Moreover, the Fever-Mercury matchup was filled with intense moments, from Cunningham’s pointing battle with DeWanna Bonner to Alyssa Thomas’ hard foul on Clark that led to a one-game suspension for her.

In the aforementioned interview, Cunningham shared her thoughts on the viral moment against DeWanna Bonner of the Mercury and said:
“That is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done. I’m telling you, everyone’s like, ‘That is so dumb.’ I think it was so dumb. But it was pissing her off, and I couldn’t help myself. I could not. She was losing her s**t, and all I was doing was literally pointing.”
Cunningham and Clark have been one of the most tight-knit duos in the WNBA, and that has also shown in their on-court chemistry. The altercation against the Mercury was also due to Clark’s initial tussle with Bonner.
