The Texas Longhorns still have the sixth-best recruiting class in the country, despite losing out on Marcus Fakatou.
The Texas Longhorns failed to land elite 2027 defensive lineman Marcus Fakatou, who committed to Ohio State over Texas, Georgia, and several other powerhouse programs.
Fakatou is the No. 2 defensive lineman in the 2027 Rivals industry rankings with a 95.79 composite rating, a four-star recruit out of Sierra Canyon in Chatsworth, California. ESPN has him listed as a five-star, the best player in California, and the 13th-best player in the country. The 6’7, 280-pound defensive tackle could project as an edge player at his current size, but his height will likely push him inside at the next level.

Fakatou chose Ohio State over a loaded list of suitors, including USC, Oregon, Notre Dame, Georgia, and Texas. His visit history tells a story worth examining. He visited USC, the local school, five times. He visited Notre Dame four times, Michigan three times, Penn State twice, Texas twice, and Nebraska twice. Ohio State, by contrast, barely hosted him at all, which suggests this was a significant NIL-driven decision by the Buckeyes.
Texas shouldn’t panic over this miss
Losing out on a player of Fakatou’s caliber stings, but the Longhorns are far from in trouble on the recruiting trail. Texas still holds the sixth-ranked class in the country and the third-ranked class in the SEC. More importantly, their defensive line haul in this cycle is already shaping up to be something special.
The Longhorns have four-star defensive lineman Kasi Currie committed, along with Tyler Alexander. That group has the foundation to develop into a dominant defensive front. Adding Fakatou would have been an elite cherry on top, but you can’t land every single recruit in a cycle this competitive.

When you look at the broader picture, this is not a loss that should cause any real concern among the Texas faithful. Ohio State appears to have been his preferred destination, and when a program makes that kind of push with NIL resources behind it, there’s only so much any other school can do.
Texas will be just fine. The defensive line talent already in the fold has the makings of something really good, and the Longhorns will have plenty more chances to add to this class before signing day.
