Stephen Curry would welcome the opportunity to share the court with LeBron James, although the Golden State Warriors star is also interested in a different kind of partnership with the future Hall of Famer.
Asked about the possibility of playing alongside James, Curry said he would enjoy the opportunity while respecting James’ decision-making process as he enters another free agency.
“I’d say more so I’m interested to just play golf with LeBron. We’ll handle the basketball stuff, but I want to see the golf LeBron free agent. He’s out here really grinding on the game,” Curry said. “But I’m sure we obviously would love to play together. I mean, hopefully it happens. But he’s deserved the opportunity and the right to take his time with the decision.”
James remains one of the most sought-after players on the market despite entering his 24th NBA season. ESPN insider Shams Charania reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers are currently the teams most frequently mentioned in league conversations regarding James’ future, while the Warriors remain a possibility.
James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds in 60 games for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2025-26 season. Charania described James as still being among the league’s top players, saying he remains “a top 15 player in the world right now” because of his production and basketball intelligence.
Golden State’s interest in James dates back to the start of free agency, with the Warriors viewed as one of the teams that could pursue a reunion between Curry and the four-time NBA champion. However, a move would require significant roster changes.
“The Warriors whole plan going into free agency was, okay, let’s see if we can get Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis,” Charania said. “Short of that, I don’t think the Warriors are up on that list.”
The Warriors finished the 2025-26 regular season with a 37-45 record and reached the play-in tournament, while the Lakers posted a 53-29 record before being swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals.
A potential James move to Golden State would reunite him with Curry after years of competition between the two superstars. Curry’s Warriors defeated James’ Cavaliers in three NBA Finals series between 2015 and 2018, while James won the 2016 championship against Golden State after overcoming a 3-1 deficit.
Other options could provide James with stronger roster stability. Cleveland finished 52-30 and reached the Eastern Conference finals before losing to the eventual champion New York Knicks. The Cavaliers have Donovan Mitchell on a four-year, $273 million extension and a frontcourt featuring Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.
Miami has also emerged as a contender after acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from the Milwaukee Bucks. The Heat could offer James another opportunity to compete for a championship alongside elite frontcourt talent and head coach Erik Spoelstra.
Philadelphia entered the discussion after acquiring Jaylen Brown and finishing 45-37 during the regular season before falling to the Knicks in the second round of the playoffs.
