Eagles News: Makai Lemon among most exciting Week 1 debut candidates

by

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles news and links …

2026 NFL season’s most highly anticipated Week 1 debuts: Newly acquired players spice up all 16 games – NFL.com
MAKAI LEMON — We started this article with former Eagles wideout A.J. Brown … and the last game of the Sunday-afternoon window features his successor in Philly. Howie Roseman and Co. spiked the hype when they jumped the Steelers to draft Lemon 20th overall (with Brown still on the team at that point). After the trade of AJB to New England, the stage is set for this USC product to take a top spot alongside DeVonta Smith in Sean Mannion’s new offense. Fair or not, the bar for Lemon’s impact will be somewhere near Brown’s best seasons in Philadelphia — and the rookie could be primed for an exciting start against the Washington secondary. [BLG Note: Two former Eagles players also made this list— The aforementioned Brown for the Patriots and Jaelan Phillips for the Panthers.]

Fantasy football buzz: Five players with breakout potential in IDP leagues – ESPN
Makai Lemon, Philadelphia Eagles: With A.J. Brown now in New England, Lemon has a clear path to playing the No. 2 role behind top wideout DeVonta Smith in a Philly offense that will have more timing throws (and under-center snaps) for quarterback Jalen Hurts under new coordinator Sean Mannion. Lemon has the foot quickness to separate, and he will accelerate through the ball to create immediate space after the catch. He’s a coverage manipulator in the route tree. We saw that on his USC tape. In that mock we did earlier this week, I drafted Lemon in the 10th round. That’s really good value for a rookie who can produce some WR2 weeks this season.

Which team poses the biggest threat to the Eagles’ NFC East threepeat? – BGN
The Eagles are the favorites to win the NFC East for a third consecutive year, something that had not been done since the Eagles won four-straight NFC East titles from 2001-2004. The Eagles should have no problems threepeating—but, they could receive a challenge from a team that has gotten gradually better over the last few years, and that’s the New York Giants, who split with the Eagles last season. It may seem strange here, considering the Giants finished 4-13 last season—the second-worst record in the NFC behind the 3-14 Arizona Cardinals.

Eagles mailbag: Create an NFL starting 22, choosing no more than one player per team – PhillyVoice
Question from @eagsfans: In this new offense please predict order of total receptions: DeVonta, Goedert? Then… Wicks? … DeVonta is going to see a healthy uptick in targets this year. He’ll be the No. 1 receiver on the team statistically by a wide margin. And then, yes, I agree that Goedert will probably be second behind DeVonta. Jalen Hurts trusts Goedert. He’ll probably have an uptick in targets as well with A.J. Brown gone. Third I’ll take Lemon. Barring an abysmal camp, he’s going to start, and in my opinion the Eagles traded up for him partly because they think he can produce immediately. Fourth, it’s a toss-up between Wicks and Brown. I think Wicks will play more snaps because he’s a very willing and able blocker, which is going to appeal to Sirianni. But I think Brown is being a little slept on and will have more receptions. Barring one season in which he only played in two games, he has gone over 500 receiving yards in all six of his other NFL seasons. He is a legitimate professional receiver with speed, quickness, and good hands.

Coaching – Iggles Blitz
Nick Sirianni is a Super Bowl winning coach. He is also a lightning rod for criticism. Part of that comes from being the coach of the Eagles, one of the most high profile jobs in pro football. Part is Sirianni’s persona, which can be over the top. Some also question what he does since he has an offensive background, but doesn’t call plays or run the offense. Let’s compare him to another coach. Sean Payton has 184 career wins, a .630 winning percentage, and a SB win of his own. He is one of the best offensive minds in the game and his teams have led the league in scoring three times. They were Top 10 in points 12 different seasons. Payton would need to win another SB to be a legit HOF candidate, but there is no doubting he’s been a terrific coach over the years. Sirianni has more SB appearances. He’s got a .694 winning percentage. Each guy has one Lombardi. And Payton had a HOF QB and Top 5 all-time passer when he won his title. Payton has stood the test of time. We’ll have to see how Sirianni’s career plays out. These are coaches with different styles, strengths and backgrounds. Both are highly successful. You would think with Payton’s offensive acumen that he would have had more postseason success. He’s got 10 playoff wins in 18 years. Sirianni has 6 wins in five years.

Roob’s Observations: Understanding just how predictable the 2025 Eagles were – NBCSP
JUST HOW PREDICTABLE WERE THEY? The Kevin Patullo offense wasn’t the worst in the NFL. Most weeks, the Eagles got off to pretty good starts, and their 6.1 points per game in the first quarter was 4th-highest in the league. They only trailed through the first quarter four times in 17 regular-season games. But as games went on, other teams adjusted and the Eagles didn’t. They couldn’t. Get this: The Eagles scored 43 offensive touchdowns last year and nearly half of them – 19 of 43 – came on their first three drives. All their other drives combined – and they averaged 10.4 drives per game – generated just 24 touchdowns. They scored a TD on 38 percent of their first three drives (19 of 50) but on just 19 percent of their drives from their fourth drive through the end of the game (24 of 127). Here’s more: The Eagles averaged 6.4 yards per play on their first three drives (15th-highest in the league) but just 5.5 yards per play after that (25th-highest). They averaged 36.3 yards on their first three drives (9th-highest in the league) but only 25.7 yards per drive after that (26th-highest in the league. The talent was there and we saw it week after week early in games. Talent wasn’t the issue. An over-matched play-caller was. Once opposing defensive coaches figured out how the Eagles were attacking, they made adjustments to slow them down, and Patullo and the Eagles’ offensive coaches couldn’t adjust back. And that’s why week after week their offense dried up after good starts. They just kept getting out-coached.

Why Eagles Should Have Brought In Competition For Jake Elliott – SI
Now the Eagles will push back that there is no competition when specialists are “running unopposed.” The belief is that the next option is a phone call away if the production-level is not up to snuff. Almost certainly Elliott has to be on a shorter leash this time around. However, there is something to the idea of being pushed in practice every day by another player with boots on the ground even if the competition is nominal. Especially for someone like Elliott, a jack of all trades as an athlete who has a very competitive streak. Whether he’s playing golf, table tennis or softball Elliott is known as a killer in the Eagles’ locker room and recently defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, a pretty solid golfer, joked on “Exciting Mics: he wants nothing to do with Elliott on the links. A daily competition would only help Elliott to regain his consistent stroke on the football field. The Eagles did take a look at former Marshall and North Carolina kicker Rece Verhoff as a tryout player during rookie camp but decided not to bring him in.

Eagles CB Quinyon Mitchell hosts youth football camp in Williston – WCJB

Why Cowboys fans are allowed to be optimistic about 2026 – Blogging The Boys
At this point in time, other teams are no different. Or do you think Eagles fans, bless their little kelly-green hearts, are sitting there going “stop all this postseason talk, you are way too optimistic“? Training camps are still more than a month away, and the opening game is even further away, but all 32 teams are going into the season hopeful that This Could Be The Year. Because in the parity-driven NFL, last season doesn’t matter. Fact is, the ‘competitive balance’ in the league gives each team hope of finishing at the top of the standings regardless of its record the previous season. Sometimes for no other reason than that other teams in the division are even worse. In the NFL, this is called parity.

Commanders favored on the road in Week 12 vs Cardinals in Arizona – Hogs Haven
In 2026, the Commanders will, like every other team in the NFL, play 17 games against 14 opponents. With the amount of roster change that NFL teams undergo annually along with the unusually large number of head coach and coordinator changes in 2026, it seems useful to spend some time to review each of Washington’s regular season opponents. In Week 12, Washington begins a stretch of 6 games in which 5 of the opponents are ranked in the lower half of ESPN’s preseason Power Index. At #29, the Cardinals are the lowest ranked team on that Power Index that the Commanders will play in 2026. By Week 12, Arizona will have played 5 games against 3 teams ranked in the top-5 (Rams twice; Seahawks twice, 49ers), as well as the Lions (6th) and Chiefs (9th). They would have to have played far beyond expectations to enter this game with a winning record or much hope of reaching the playoffs.

John Harbaugh is the right leader for the NY Giants, and here’s why – Big Blue View
Talk to any New York Giants fan these days and you sense the excitement. The hope. The optimism. There has been some of that during a difficult 13-year stretch, but not like what you feel now. FL analysts who dare to predict that the downtrodden Giants might go from worst to first in the NFC East, or at least be good enough to compete for a playoff berth, are not scoffed at the way they would have been in recent years. Their opinions are given validity. The reason for the change? John Harbaugh. Simple as that. Harbaugh brings credibility to the head coaching position and to the organization that has not existed since Tom Coughlin coached the Giants. Harbaugh is 14th on the all-time win list for coaches with 180 regular-season victories. He has coached in 24 playoff games, sixth-most of all-time. In 18 years with the Baltimore Ravens, his teams won fewer than eight games just one time. The Ravens made the playoffs in 12 of those 18 seasons. They won a Super Bowl. Harbaugh has brought much more to New York than a resume filled with gaudy accomplishments. He has brought a presence, a force of will, an uncommon energy, and an expectation of daily excellence that have changed the Giants organization for the better.
