Alex Bowman has been at the center of NASCAR silly season in 2026. With Bowman’s contract set to expire, he is scheduled to become a free agent. Hendrick Motorsports would love to have the driver of the No. 48 car back as he considers his future; however, what if he shockingly decides to leave for another organization?
In the unlikely scenario that Bowman leaves Hendrick Motorsports while not retiring, which teams would make the most sense for 2027?

It would be pretty shocking if Bowman leaves Hendrick Motorsports for another organization, but departing the Cup Series would be even more stunning. However, if Bowman is unable to find a Cup ride that allows him to win, what about JR Motorsports in the NASCAR O’Reilly Series? It’s very, very unlikely, but it wouldn’t be a bad scenario.
Kaulig Racing, NASCAR Cup Series

Kaulig Racing will likely have Ram support in the Cup Series soon, making it an intriguing destination. If Bowman isn’t considering the idea of retirement, Kaulig Racing would be a great long-term fit. While unlikely, the 33-year-old driver would become the face of Dodge’s No. 1 team with heavy support.

Richard Childress Racing, NASCAR Cup Series

Richard Childress Racing is another team looking for a driver after Kyle Busch’s tragic death. The No. 33 car is open, and Bowman would be replacing one of NASCAR’s legends. While Richard Childress Racing hasn’t been very strong over the last few seasons, it would give Bowman a long runway in the Cup Series before Carson Brown makes the jump.

Trackhouse Racing would be a very interesting scenario. If Hendrick Motorsports decides to pry Connor Zilisch away for the 2027 season, Bowman could essentially “swap” places with him. Bowman would drive the No. 88 car alongside Ross Chastain and Shane van Gisbergen. However, would Hendrick Motorsports rather wait for Zilisch to become available for the 2028 season?

Spire Motorsports, NASCAR Cup Series

Spire Motorsports is the best landing spot for Bowman if he leaves Hendrick Motorsports. The No. 71 car could become available if Michael McDowell doesn’t return, allowing Bowman to race alongside Carson Hocevar and Daniel Suarez. Spire Motorsports has Chase-level equipment and would likely be a better situation than the current status of the No. 48 team.
