VMI Hires Le Moyne’s Adam Zaczkowski as Head Coach
Virginia Military Institute on Tuesday announced that Adam Zaczkowski will take over the school’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs.
Zaczkowski stepped down as the head coach of his alma mater, Le Moyne, earlier in the day. He had been at the school since 2014, spending the first five seasons as an assistant coach and then as the program’s second ever head coach and aquatics director from 2019-22. He also filled a role as special assistant to the director of athletics since 2021.
“I am happy to accept the position of Head Swimming and Diving Coach at VMI,” Zaczkowski said in a press release. “I want to thank AD Walton and Superintendent Lt. Gen. Furness. Throughout this process, VMI’s history and culture are a place that I want to be a part of. My family is excited to be in Lexington.”
He replaces Scott Thacker, who was hired away in June to lead Army’s swimming and diving teams.
Zaczkowski led Le Moyne to several Northeast Conference championships and conference records, the conference which VMI is joining. His coaching staff was named NEC staff of the year in 2024 and 2026. He led the program’s transition from the Northeast 10 Conference.
The Dolphins won 14 medals, including two championships, at the conference meet in 2026, up from four medals the year before. The men’s team won its first dual meet over a fellow Division I program in 2025 against Canisius.

When we began this search process, we were seeking a dynamic, team-oriented, compassionate leader who had the drive to build a championship-caliber program in the NEC. Adam checked all of those boxes and showed the search committee his willingness to lean in and embrace the VMI experience.”
