With the 2026-27 men’s college basketball season just 100 days away, anticipation is building for the return of college hoops. As the countdown to tipoff continues, several key storylines surrounding the upcoming season are beginning to take shape.
How do the Gators fare among the storylines brewing?

The SEC is shaping up to be the nation’s premier basketball conference once again in 2026-27, with as many as 11 of its 16 teams possessing legitimate top 25 potential. The Gators return to national prominence, retaining most of their core while conference contemporaries such as Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and others strengthened their rosters through retention, the transfer portal, and top-100 recruits.
The conference’s investment in basketball is also reflected in its roster-building resources. The SEC retained 10 of the league’s top 30 scorers from last season while adding 11 more from the other four major conferences, giving it the deepest collection of proven talent in the country heading into the new season.
The NCAA’s implementation of the 5-for-5 eligibility model has also contributed to the uncertainty surrounding several players, including Florida guard Denzel Aberdeen.
The rule limits athletes to five seasons of eligibility within a five-year window, and its timing has created confusion for players who have already used multiple seasons.

For Aberdeen, the transition has played a role in questions surrounding his eligibility and whether he will be able to return for the 2026-27 season.
CBS Sports also released its early All-American predictions for the 2026-27 season, with Florida forward Tommy Haugh earning a spot on the projected first team. Haugh is joined by Vanderbilt point guard Tyler Tanner, Michigan State guard Jeremy Fears Jr., BYU guard Rob Wright and Louisville forward Flory Bidunga.
Florida’s massive frontcourt should continuously cause mismatches for opponents in the half-court with Alex Condon and Rueben Chinyelu creating leverage as efficient one-on-one scorers. With more consistent guard play from Boogie Fland and advised transition looks with Tommy Haugh, the Gators could easily be a top offseason in the nation.
Defensively, Todd Golden has coached back-to-back top-10 defenses, and again they should continue the trend this season. The 2026 National Defensive Player of the Year, Rueben Chinyelu, enforces the unit, with Boogie Fland as a solid point-of-attack defender. Florida’s size with elite rebounding is the exact recipe for success on the defensive side of the ball.

Thomas Haugh withdrew from the 2026 NBA Draft to compete for a national title, knowing his stock would rise simply because the 2027 NBA Draft was not as strong as the previous years.
Coming into the 2026-27 season, Haugh is projected to be a lottery pick, and with another successful season with the Gators, his stock may rise higher than that.
