While talking season is in full swing, only 40 days remain before the preseason predictions cease and SEC football officially begins.
Five head coaches in the league are set to make their debuts with their new respective squads, as they attempt to usher in a new era by rebuilding and revamping. Others, like Mississippi State head coach Jeff Lebby and South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer, are on the hot seat if they can’t turn things around and improve from last season’s efforts.

Outside of coaching headlines, major quarterback battles are occurring at Arkansas, Florida, Tennessee and Alabama, as they look to find their starter for the upcoming campaign. Meanwhile, established gunslingers like Trinidad Chambliss and Arch Manning are looking to exceed expectations and bring hardware to the SEC once again.
That’s just a small glimpse of all the storylines set to unfold in a few short weeks. The time for talking is almost over, with Missouri opening the season for the SEC against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on September 3.
Based on talent, coaching staff and scheduling, here are my predictions of where each SEC team will finish the 2026-27 season:

After a successful tenure at Memphis, Ryan Silverfield is tasked with arguably one of the biggest challenges of his coaching career — revamping the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Hogs finished 2025 with a 2-10 overall record and a 0-8 mark in the conference. I don’t expect an insane turnaround out of the Razorbacks in year one of the Silverfield era in Fayetteville, but a (very) slight improvement is realistic.

Clark Lea doesn’t get enough respect for the work he’s done in completely transforming Vanderbilt into a feared team in the league. The Commodores lost Heisman Trophy finalist Diego Pavia, creating a massive hole in Lea’s offense entering 2026. Five-star freshman Jared Curtis, who made a massive splash nationally by signing with Vanderbilt over Georgia, will likely start right away.
Curtis has the potential to become a star quarterback in the SEC eventually, but it’s a little too soon to label him the next Pavia, especially as the Commodores adjust to a nine-game conference schedule.

14. Kentucky Wildcats

The Kentucky Wildcats cleaned house in the offseason and hired former Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein to take the reins of the program as the new head coach. Stein has an elite track record as a quarterback developer, coaching stars like Bo Nix, Dillon Gabriel and Dante Moore during his time with the Ducks.
Kentucky’s offense could be severely underrated this year with Notre Dame dual-threat quarterback Kenny Minchey, but it will take much more to get the Wildcats back into the spotlight.

Auburn’s new head coach is one of four from the American Conference set to make his debut with his new program. Alex Golesh is an offensive mastermind and has a reputation for thriving as the underdog. With Byrum Brown following him from USF, the Tigers could be a sleeper team in the SEC this season.

Missouri has too many questions and not enough answers entering the 2026 season. Ahmad Hardy is one of the nation’s top running backs when healthy, but his return from a gunshot wound in the offseason could be the difference between the Tigers finishing at No. 12 or inside the top 10.
11. Mississippi State Bulldogs

Get those cowbells ringing because Mississippi State is going to play spoiler against multiple teams in the conference. Despite another tough schedule, the Bulldogs retained quarterback Kamario Taylor, who has earned much praise for his arm talent and elite speed.

While MSU was projected No. 15 in the preseason SEC media poll, I believe Jeff Lebby will turn things around in his third year in Starkvegas.

With the return of electric weapons like running back Jadan Baugh and wide receivers Dallas Wilson and Vernell Brown III, the Florida Gators have the potential to be a scary team to face in Jon Sumrall’s first season as the head coach in The Swamp.

This is the season for Shane Beamer to remove himself from the hot seat and save his spot as the head coach of the Gamecocks. With the return of quarterback LaNorris Sellers and wide receiver Nyck Harbor to the offense, along with projected early-round NFL Draft pick Dylan Stewart on defense, it is now-or-never for South Carolina.

Does a quarterback battle really matter in a Josh Heupel offense? Whether it’s George McIntyre or Fiazon Brandon, the Vols will be firing on all cylinders, as Heupel looks to lead the program back to the upper echelon of the SEC in his sixth year at the helm in Knoxville.

The Crimson Tide enters 2026 with various unknowns, including at quarterback. Despite the battle between Keelon Russell and Austin Mack, Alabama has the weapons to be competitive in the SEC. Ryan-Coleman Williams is one of the most talented wide receivers in the country, but Alabama’s lack of establishing success on the ground under head coach Kalen DeBoer will cost them again this season.

Lane Kiffin has become college football’s ultimate villain, which is a role he has embraced with open arms, as he ushers in a new era in Baton Rouge. If he can stay healthy, Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt could mesh well with Kiffin’s offensive system, but difficult road games at Ole Miss and Tennessee, while also facing Texas and Alabama in Death Valley, will provide some land mines for the Tigers in 2026.

The Sooners have one of the most dangerous defensive units in the country. a year removed from ranking No. 1 in points and rushing yards allowed per game. Another elite defense, coupled with John Mateer‘s return, could spell trouble for SEC foes and teams in the College Football Playoff.

Mike Elko is building a college football titan in College Station, but the Aggies‘ success will depend heavily on the progression of Marcel Reed. Texas A&M ranks fourth in the conference in returning defensive production, which is Elko’s bread and butter. Road games at LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma will be difficult, but the leadership and experienced talent should have the Aggies in the national title conversation again this year.

Ole Miss enters 2026 with a massive chip on its shoulder after Kiffin’s abrupt departure. The Rebels return the best quarterback-running back duo in the SEC, while remaining in the top 15 of transfer portal and recruiting rankings. There will be some hiccups in Pete Golding’s first full season as the head coach, but Oxford will be rocking all year long with another playoff appearance.

If not this season, then when? The Longhorns have all the pieces to live up to the hype and national narrative. Arch Manning is one of the most impressive quarterbacks in the country and has Auburn transfer Cam Coleman, who is considered the top SEC wideout entering the year. It is sink-or-swim for Steve Sarkisian, but I believe Texas has the talent and coaching staff to reach Atlanta for the second time since joining the conference.
1. Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia has been to the SEC Championship eight times and won four of its appearances under head coach Kirby Smart. The Bulldogs were voted the unanimous No. 1 team in the SEC preseason media poll for good reason. They rank third in the conference in total returning production, which includes signal-caller Gunner Stockton. Expect the Dawgs to keep rolling down the track in 2026.
