For Travis Perry, playing basketball at Kentucky was the dream.
The former Lyon County star grew up watching the Wildcats and eventually received a scholarship offer from former head coach John Calipari, committing to the program and staying with Kentucky even after Calipari departed for Arkansas and Mark Pope took over.

Then after one season in Lexington, Perry made the difficult decision to leave the program he always dreamed of representing.
Perry entered the transfer portal with two hours remaining before the deadline, choosing to find a new opportunity after Kentucky’s roster moves created a challenging path toward consistent playing time. Pope had already added Pitt transfer Jaland Lowe, Florida transfer Denzel Aberdeen, returning guards Otega Oweh and Collin Chandler, and five-star freshman Jasper Johnson to the backcourt.
Despite limited opportunities as a freshman, Perry showed flashes during the season, averaging 2.7 points, 0.8 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game while shooting 31.3% from the field, 32.1% from 3-point range and 80% from the free-throw line.
Leaving Kentucky was not an easy choice for the Kentucky native, who became a high school legend. Perry finished as the state’s all-time leading scorer with 5,481 points, became the only player in Kentucky history to surpass 5,000 points, won Mr. Basketball, earned two Gatorade Player of the Year awards, and captured a state championship.

“When you make a decision like that, especially when it’s such a big fanbase like Kentucky’s, there’s gonna be speculation, backlash,” Perry told Joey Dwyer of Basket Under Review. “You’re getting DMs, you’re getting comments, all that stuff.”
Ultimately, Perry said he had to prioritize his development.
“That was the first big, hard decision that I feel like I had to make,” Perry said. “I just kinda had to put the weight in the things I was really, really focused on, and that was becoming a better basketball player every day and being in the best situation for myself.”
While leaving Kentucky was difficult, Perry believes the decision was necessary for the next chapter of his basketball career. He will be suiting up for the Dayton Flyers this season after one season with the Ole Miss Rebels.
