The Portland Trail Blazers have signed guard John Tonje to a two-way contract, the team announced.
Tonje joins Portland after spending the 2025-26 season with the Boston Celtics and their G League affiliates. The 25-year-old appeared in six NBA games for Boston, averaging 2.5 points and 1.0 rebound in 7.0 minutes per game while shooting 28.6% from the field and 30.0% from three-point range.
The 6-foot-5, 218-pound wing made a bigger impact in the G League, where he started all 29 games he played between the Salt Lake City Stars and Maine Celtics. Tonje averaged 18.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 31.3 minutes per game, shooting 44.0% from the field, 35.4% from three-point range and 88.8% from the free throw line.
Portland’s decision to add Tonje gives the team another perimeter scoring option after reaching the playoffs in 2025-26. The Trail Blazers finished the regular season 42-40, earning the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference before falling to the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 in the first round.
The Blazers’ rotation already features several young guards and wings, including Shaedon Sharpe, Scoot Henderson, Caleb Love, Sidy Cissoko and Blake Wesley. Sharpe averaged 20.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 50 games last season, while Henderson averaged 14.2 points and 3.7 assists across 30 appearances.
Tonje brings a different profile as a strong shooter with size on the wing. Portland ranked among the more balanced three-point shooting teams in 2025-26, with Toumani Camara shooting 37.0% from deep on 7.2 attempts per game.
Before turning professional, Tonje built his reputation through a long college career at Colorado State, Missouri and Wisconsin. During his final season at Wisconsin, he averaged 19.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game, earning Consensus Second Team All-American honors and First Team All-Big Ten recognition.
Tonje was originally selected by the Utah Jazz with the 53rd overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft before joining Boston.
