Before the Indiana Fever‘s 108-100 loss to the Minnesota Lynx, supporters of Cunningham gathered outside Target Center in Minneapolis for a rally focused on protecting women’s sports. The demonstration came after similar events were held in Seattle and Portland earlier in the week. Cunningham has become a central figure in the debate after publicly sharing her position on transgender athletes participating in women’s sports.
Sunday’s gathering featured people wearing XX-XY Athletics shirts and holding signs with messages including “Pro-Women, Not Anti-Trans” and “Trust the Science.”
Tensions reportedly escalated when counterprotesters arrived.
Security intervenes outside Target Center
According to OutKick, counterprotesters shouted through megaphones and attempted to take shirts from Cunningham’s supporters. The outlet reported that security personnel intervened after one interaction became physical. Former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines, who has been outspoken about transgender participation in women’s sports, attended the rally and posted video from outside the arena.

“I show up for my girl @sophaller because she shows up for my daughter,” Gaines wrote on X.
The scenes added another layer to an already highly anticipated matchup between the top teams in the WNBA’s Eastern and Western conferences.
Cunningham was loudly booed when she entered Sunday’s game. She finished with 13 points, three assists and two rebounds in 28 minutes off the bench, making four of her six shots and three of four attempts from beyond the arc. Minnesota extended its winning streak to 10 games and improved to a league-best 25-6. Indiana fell to 19-11 after having its five-game winning streak snapped.

Cheryl Reeve addresses demonstrations
Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve discussed the rallies before the game and said the WNBA should remain a safe environment while also acknowledging the right to peaceful assembly.
“I don’t think we should feel like our safe space is being threatened,” Reeve said. “That’s what I enjoy about the WNBA. And I think we have to continue to safeguard that.”
Reeve added that she had not heard every detail about what had occurred but said everyone has the right to assemble peacefully. The Minnesota coach also reiterated her support for transgender children participating in sports, calling it a human-rights issue. She acknowledged that the discussion becomes more complicated after puberty and at higher competitive levels, where scholarships and Olympic opportunities can be involved.

Reeve said she believes those questions require thoughtful conversations aimed at finding common ground instead of immediately excluding athletes. Before tipoff, Reeve and Cunningham were seen having a cordial conversation at midcourt. After the game, Reeve said both understood the influence of their respective platforms and shared a desire to educate, even if they did not agree on every part of the issue.
Cunningham has repeatedly said she does not hate transgender people but believes girls’ and women’s sports should be protected. She has also stood firmly behind her comments, telling reporters she would “never falter” in her beliefs while maintaining that there is “room to love everyone.”
The growing number of demonstrations suggests the debate surrounding Cunningham and the WNBA is unlikely to disappear soon. Sunday’s tense scenes also showed how quickly that discussion can move beyond basketball when competing groups meet outside an arena.
