It appears Michigan State basketball’s roster is set in stone, with no fifth year additions in the works for the Spartans.
The college basketball world could be heading towards a notable shakeup following the court injunction last week that granted class of 2022 players a fifth year of eligibility. This is notable to the Spartans, who have two former players that some believed would be in the mix to return to Michigan State — forward Jaxon Kohler and point guard Tre Holloman. Both are reportedly exploring a return to college for one more season, but it sounds like it will not be with the Spartans.

Spartans head coach Tom Izzo was on national analyst Jon Rothstein’s show on Tuesday where he made the statement that his roster is set for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
“We gave advice as coaches,” Izzo said during the interview with Rothstein. “If we’re going to make a decision on the fifth year, let’s do it in April. Then, you wouldn’t recruit guys. Now I’ve recruited guys for those positions, I can’t bring another guy in.”
When it became apparent that Kohler would be pursuing another year in college hoops, many fans were pumped about him returning to Michigan State. But it was also never stated that Michigan State would even be open to him returning given the fact that the roster appeared set in stone this late in the game.

The same can be said about Holloman, who transferred to NC State last offseason but is back in the East Lansing, Mich. area this summer and still close to the Spartans program. It appears he will also need to find a new destination should he be granted the opportunity to play again at the college level.
