Chicago couldn’t hold a late lead on Monday night in a 106-101 loss to the visiting Phoenix Mercury. Courtney Vandersloot’s potential game-tying layup with less than 10 seconds left was blocked, and Phoenix sealed the game at the foul line. Vandersloot, Kamilla Cardoso and DiJonai Carrington scored 16 points each for the Sky, with Vandersloot adding 10 assists and Cardoso grabbing 13 rebounds.
Nneka Ogwumike scored 20 points in the second half, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:25 left as the Sparks stopped a six-game losing streak with a 106-101 road win over the Portland Fire on Sunday. Dearica Hamby finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds while Ogwumike added 22 points and 10 boards. Erica Wheeler tossed in 12 points to go with eight assists, with Rae Burrell, Ariel Atkins and Jihyun Park also scoring 12 points each.
Ogwumike leads Los Angeles with averages of 17.4 points and 9.0 rebounds, with Hamby scoring 15.0 points per game and Wheeler dishing 5.4 assists a night. Sydney Taylor scores an average of 14.7 points for the Sky while Cardoso gets 14.3 points and 8.6 boards per game and Vandersloot deals out 4.9 assists an outing.
