Ben Simmons is fueling speculation about a possible return to the league after spending an extended period away from competitive basketball.
The former No. 1 overall pick saw his career decline significantly following injuries, mental challenges and a turbulent departure from the Philadelphia 76ers.
Once regarded as one of the NBA’s most versatile defenders and playmakers, Simmons eventually found himself without a spot on an NBA roster.
Now 30, Simmons suggested Saturday that he is prepared to pursue another opportunity.
He posted a photo of himself near a basketball hoop on Instagram along with a message reflecting on the difficult stages of his career.
“I wouldn’t change the story,” Simmons wrote. “The highs, the lows, the pain, the time, the lessons, I embrace all of it. Every chapter built something in me that I couldn’t have built any other way. Grateful for where I’ve been. Proud of where I stand. Ready for wherever this goes.”
His comments quickly generated speculation about a potential destination, including the possibility of returning to Philadelphia.
The Sixers now have a significantly different roster, and Simmons could potentially provide defense, size and secondary playmaking in a reserve role if he proves capable of contributing again.
