Illinois football has reached the point where the schedule no longer offers many soft landings. That is the price of raising expectations under Bret Bielema.

The Illini are no longer merely trying to scrape together bowl eligibility; they are trying to prove that the last two seasons were the start of a sustainable climb toward the top half of the Big Ten.
According to CBS Sports college football analyst Brad Crawford, that climb could be tested in a deceptively dangerous late-October road trip to Maryland.
The matchup itself may not carry the national juice of Illinois’ home games against Oregon or Nebraska, and that is exactly why it is dangerous. The Illini host Oregon in one of the most anticipated games on their schedule Oct. 24, then turn around and welcome Nebraska to Champaign. Tucked directly between those emotional home dates is a Halloween trip to College Park.
“Sandwiched between the Illini’s anticipated home games against Oregon and Nebraska is a favorable road trip,” Crawford wrote. “Unless the Terrapins exceed expectations with Malik Washington returning at quarterback and a fierce defensive front.”

That is the entire trap-game formula. Illinois should be the better team on paper, but Maryland has enough pieces to make the night uncomfortable if the Illini arrive flat. Washington gives the Terrapins stability at quarterback, while a physical defensive front could turn the game into the type of grind that has tripped Illinois up before.
Crawford pointed directly to recent history as the warning sign.
“Illinois suffered a head-scratching loss at Wisconsin in 2025 and a tough home defeat to Minnesota during a 10-win 2024,” Crawford wrote. “This is the type of game the Illini must avoid overlooking.”

That is especially true because Illinois has spent the Bielema era building credibility through physicality and week-to-week toughness. The Illini have been at their best when they turn games into disciplined, low-mistake contests and avoid giving underdogs short fields or early confidence.
For Illinois, the Maryland game is less about style points and more about maturity. Big Ten contenders do not simply get up for Oregon and Nebraska; they handle business when the spotlight is dimmer, the crowd is quieter and the opponent is desperate to spoil somebody else’s season.

If the Illini want to keep pushing toward the conference’s upper tier, this is exactly the type of road game they must win without drama. Otherwise, Maryland could become the latest reminder that progress in the Big Ten can disappear quickly when focus slips.
