‘Weak and Dishonest’ — WNBA World Reacts As Dream Break Silence on Forcing Sophie Cunningham Fans to Cover Polarizing Shirts

by

The Indiana FeverAtlanta Dream showdown on Sunday was overshadowed by claims that State Farm Arena security forced Sophie Cunningham supporters to cover their shirts. A mother and daughter, who reportedly paid $1,000 each for their tickets, attended the game to cheer for the Fever guard and support her stance on transgender athletes competing against women.

The following day, the Dream addressed the controversy, saying that “at no point was Dream personnel involved in the decisions made by WNBA security.”

The statement immediately triggered another wave of reactions across the WNBA world.

The mother wore an “XX/XY” shirt, while her daughter had “For the Girls” printed across the back. According to their account, security approached them before overtime and gave them an ultimatum: “cover the shirts or leave.”

YouTuber Adam Francisco, who interviewed the pair, also claimed that a woman wearing a “Protect Trans Rights” shirt was shown on the arena’s big screen before security later asked her to cover it.

The Dream stated that the organization is committed to providing a “safe and inclusive environment for everyone.” The team added that “WNBA security took actions that fell short of that standard.”

That response did little to calm the backlash.

“Weak and dishonest. You deserve to only play in a 5000 seat arena,” an X user wrote.
