Debate rages on the real reason behind record-breaking WNBA viewership numbers

by

On August 23rd, the Indiana Fever faced the Chicago Sky for their third matchup this season. In their second game on August 8th, Chicago’s DiJonai Carrington was ejected for a hard foul on Fever Sophie Cunningham, and the two had to be separated.

Carrington taunted the Fever on social media after the incident, posting an aggressive countdown. Ultimately, the Sky lost the next game 90-86. Many people were also tuned in following Cunningham’s comments on transgender athletes in the WNBA, making the NBC and Peacock broadcast highly anticipated.

Caitlin Clark gave a show-stopping performance, scoring 37 points along with 10 assists as she and star guard Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever to victory.

According to NBC Sports, “primetime presentation of the Indiana Fever-Chicago Sky Sunday Night Basketball game on Aug. 23 averaged a Total Audience Delivery (TAD) of 3.31 million viewers on NBC and Peacock, making it the most-watched WNBA regular-season game since the opening weekend of the league’s inaugural 1997 season and the third most-watched WNBA regular-season game ever.”

Following the record-breaking news, fans are debating who to thank: the media dramatics or the athletes who focus strictly on basketball.

“Caitlin Clark and the Fever continue to bring in the record setting numbers. And with the intrigue of it being DiJonai Carrington posting the date on the latest showdown between her vs Clark and Sophie Cunningham, it lead to another #WNBA ratings record,” one person posted on X.

Maybe now @NBCSports@NBCSportsPR you can advocate for better treatment of the young lady that is bringing you all those ratings and ad investment. Caitlin Clark 2026 WNBA MVP,” another fan added.

“This is why I believe the WNBA is totally fine with any in game controversy, especially in regards to the Fever. They know those already big Fever TV numbers are going to inflate even more with the previous game drama between Clark & Carrington. It’s a guaranteed lightning rod!” someone else posted.

It’ll be fascinating to see what viewership records the league will shatter next.
