The move coincides with Bonner’s desire to compete for a championship as her career nears its end.
“At this stage of my career, I don’t know what the future holds, but I’m grateful to the Mercury for giving me the opportunity to play in what could be one of my final postseason opportunities,” Bonner said in a quote obtained by The Athletic. “The fans, this community and the Mercury organization have embraced me throughout my career, and I’ll always be grateful for that. Being part of this franchise has given me so many incredible memories, and Phoenix will always be a special part of my career.”

Bonner’s career has spanned three franchises and two decades, beginning when Phoenix took her fifth overall in the 2009 draft. Her decade with the Mercury produced two championships, in 2009 and 2014, along with three All-Star selections and three Sixth Player of the Year honors.

A sign-and-trade sent her to Connecticut in 2020, where she spent five seasons adding three more All-Star appearances and guiding the Sun to four semifinal runs and a 2022 Finals berth that ended in a loss to Las Vegas. Indiana signed her to a one-year deal after that stretch, though she was waived just nine games in.
Bonner found her way back to Phoenix from there, closing out last season as part of the Mercury’s trip to the 2025 WNBA Finals, where the Aces swept them to claim the title. Now, as the Mercury are out of playoff contention, Bonner looks to contribute her veteran experience to an Atlanta Dream team that had a strong regular season and aims to build on that success in the upcoming postseason.
