Bella Mir has responded to the biggest setback of her young MMA career after suffering a historic upset loss to Alex Apodaca at Dana White’s Contender Series on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old prospect entered the DWCS main event as one of the biggest betting favorites in the history of the series, with odds closing in as high as -6000. Instead, Apodaca produced a career-defining performance to defeat Mir by unanimous decision and earn a UFC contract.

The defeat was particularly surprising because of Mir’s decorated wrestling and grappling background. The daughter of former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir entered the fight undefeated at 4-0 as a professional, with three of her previous victories coming by first-round submission.

Mir’s Statement
Mir addressed the defeat Wednesday in a lengthy statement posted to Instagram, making it clear that she intends to use the loss as a learning experience rather than allowing it to derail her career

“I’ve lost so many times,” Mir wrote. “Big or small, each loss carries me into a different mindset and learning experience to be a better athlete.”
Mir had also recently reached the pinnacle of her collegiate wrestling career by winning the NCAA Division I women’s championship at 145 pounds. Her combination of elite wrestling credentials, Brazilian jiu-jitsu experience, and family name made her one of the most closely watched prospects on the DWCS roster.

Mir acknowledged the magnitude of the defeat in her Instagram statement while refusing to treat it as a defining moment.

“I have overcome every single obstacle (in) my life, and I will overcome this one,” Mir wrote. “Now it’s just a bit different that this loss is more famous than all my other losses.”
She also pushed back against the idea that the loss could break her, thanking those who reached out with support while recognizing that the setback has brought considerable attention.
“And I promise to all of you that it takes way more than hate and one single loss in my MMA career to break me,” Mir wrote.

Mir also made a point of giving credit to the fighter who delivered the upset. “I also want to thank Alex for taking this fight, all respect to her,” she wrote.
Apodaca Scores Massive Upset Win
That acknowledgment comes after Apodaca earned widespread praise for her composure and ability to keep Mir from turning the contest into the grappling-heavy fight many expected.
Apodaca, who started training MMA at 19, refused to allow Mir to dictate the fight with her grappling. The 32-year-old underdog Apodaca had entered the bout on a three-fight winning streak but was a massive underdog against the highly touted Mir.

She survived Mir’s attempts to impose her wrestling and was able to win enough striking exchanges across the three rounds to secure a 29-28 decision on all three judges’ scorecards. With her performance, Apodaca earned her place on the UFC roster after pulling off the biggest betting upset in Contender Series history.
Mir’s lack of experience became more significant as the fight progressed. Mir had previously been able to finish three opponents in the opening round, meaning she had not been forced to navigate the kind of extended, high-pressure fight she encountered against Apodaca.

Still, Mir remains determined to continue pursuing her goals in MMA. She pointed to a recurring pattern in her athletic career, suggesting that setbacks have historically motivated her to achieve even more afterward.
“Every time I lose, I come back and win something bigger and better,” Mir wrote. “No loss has ever defined me, and neither will this one.”
For now, Mir’s path to the UFC has taken an unexpected detour, while Apodaca leaves DWCS with a contract and one of the most memorable victories in the show’s history. Mir’s response shows that she treats the upset not as the end of her UFC ambitions, but as an important lesson at an early stage of her career.
