The Oklahoma Sooners still need a quarterback for their 2028 recruiting class, despite their options now being a bit thinner after Trey Tagliaferri committed to Notre Dame.
The Oklahoma Sooners missed on 2028 quarterback Trey Tagliaferri, who committed to Notre Dame over OU and Penn State. The four-star signal-caller from Colts Neck, New Jersey, announced his decision on social media, posting, “All glory to God. Go Irish. Let’s go.”
Tagliaferri is a 90.02-rated player on Rivals Industry and the No. 13 quarterback in the 2028 class. He’s the No. 9 player in the state of New Jersey out of Bergen Catholic and a top-200 player nationally. Some sites, including Rivals, have him ranked as high as No. 110 in the country. The 6’2, 190-pound prospect is a legitimate get for the Fighting Irish.

Why Tagliaferri picked Notre Dame
Tagliaferri visited Penn State three times, more than any other school. He also took trips to Rutgers, Ole Miss, Alabama, and Notre Dame twice before ultimately choosing the Irish. Geography played a role here. Notre Dame, while not in his backyard, is significantly closer to home than Norman, and the program’s prestige speaks for itself.
Penn State appeared to be a real threat given the volume of visits, but Notre Dame won out. For Oklahoma, losing a recruit to a school with that kind of proximity advantage and brand power is understandable.

Oklahoma has other targets at quarterback
The Sooners shouldn’t panic over this one. Oklahoma has several 2028 quarterbacks the staff has taken a strong liking to, including Graham Simpson, Brady Quinn, Gavin Strang, and Trey White. Those four have drawn the most interest from the OU coaching staff so far in the cycle.
There are even local options on the radar. Nash Henry, a quarterback at Norman North High School, is a player the Sooners have been watching, though they have not yet extended an offer.
The 2028 quarterback class is still young, and Oklahoma’s board is far from empty. The Sooners have a long track record of identifying and landing their guy at the position. That process takes time, and losing one prospect to Notre Dame in June doesn’t alter the class’s trajectory.
As we all know, OU will find a quarterback. They always do.
