Saturday in the WNBA was anything but uneventful. Saturday’s game between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky saw Fever guard Sophie Cunningham end up on the wrong end of a very hard foul.
While Cunningham was attempting a layup in transition, Sky guard DiJonai Carrington struck her in the face while going for a chase-down block, sending her tumbling to the floor. After video review, Carrington was assessed a flagrant 2 foul and ejected from the game.

After being removed from competition, Carrington attributed the loss to “white privilege” on Threads.
Riley Gaines disagrees
However, conservative pundit Riley Gaines doesn’t think things are quite so cut and dry.
“I would actually say that this is Black privilege, to be totally honest with you, because her posting this white racist comment right after assaulting Sophie Cunningham on the court is actually black privilege because she knows the WNBA won’t do a single thing of significance about it,” Gaines said.
“And imagine if the roles were reversed. If Sophie made a comment similar to this, then she’d likely never play again. And actually, we just saw this from Coach Sandy Brondello.

“She got disciplined for making, I believe, a pretty innocent, maybe, you know, offhand comment about talking about Angel Reese and saying that she’s a ‘protected species.’ She was suspended and disciplined. And I think if that’s the standard, then DiJonai should be too.”
Tom Concha called for Carrington to be suspended for the rest of the season on Fox News on Saturday after the game.
“And the WNBA, right, the people that run that league, if you’re DiJonai here and you have a foul like that, I don’t want to hear about, okay, that’s a flagrant 2 and you get this sort of fine. She should be suspended for the rest of the season because this isn’t, as you said, Tommy, a whoops. This is intentional.”
Ultimately, race wasn’t a factor either way, and Carrington already served her punishment via her ejection. The Fever-Sky rematch on August 23 is sure to be entertaining.
