Right-wing sports commentator Clay Travis said that Caitlin Clark should leave the WNBA and start her own basketball league after WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert issued a statement condemning the death threats received by Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas.
Travis’ suggestion came after Thomas broke her silence on her recent suspension for pushing Clark in the neck and throat area. Travis was clearly not a fan of what Thomas had to say or the league’s response to it, prompting him to suggest that Clark should leave the league altogether.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Thomas revealed that she has received death threats and racially charged messages after the incident, which she called a “total accident.”
“It’s unfortunate that it’s come to this over basketball,” Thomas said via ESPN. “A lot of us — myself included — didn’t even know the play took place until after the game. Now we’re being painted as thugs. There’s death threats out on us. It’s really unacceptable. It’s something that needs to change in this league, and I’m just really sick and tired of it.”
Thomas’ revelations prompted a statement from WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, “vehemently” condemning “any and all forms of hate.”
“The safety and well-being of everyone in our community is always the league’s top priority,” Engelbert wrote. “We are aware of Alyssa Thomas’ comments, and what she and her teammates have experienced is completely unacceptable and not representative of the WNBA community. The league and our security team have been in contact with the Phoenix Mercury organization and remain committed to protecting all players.”

Apparently, Travis was not a fan of this statement from Engelbert condemning the death threats directed toward one of the league’s players, as the OutKick founder shared Engelbert’s statement on social media and suggested that Clark should leave the league.
“Caitlin Clark needs to leave the WNBA and start her own league. I’m not kidding. I bet I could raise $500 million for her new league in two days. She could take 20% of the league and bank a hundred million in equity, more than she will make in a career in the WNBA,” Travis wrote in a post on X.
“The WNBA has made it clear it doesn’t want her and worse than that it won’t protect her either. I’m sure there are many women who hate the culture of this league & would love to play elsewhere for more money & bigger crowds. No brainer decision for her. Great business opportunity,” he wrote in a follow-up post.

It’s worth noting that Clark has never expressed any interest in leaving the WNBA, nor has she ever expressed public discontent with how she is treated by the league.
