Fans at MLS games in Montreal and Vancouver booed the U.S. national anthem over the weekend after trade talks between Canada and the U.S. broke down.
Boos were audible at Stade Saputo in Montreal ahead of CF Montreal’s match against the LA Galaxy on Saturday, Aug. 22.

Later on Saturday, some fans at BC Place in Vancouver also booed the American anthem ahead of the Vancouver Whitecaps’ match against FC Dallas.
The boos came after talks between the U.S. and Canada broke down over the weekend. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he called off negotiations after Americans introduced last-minute terms that were “unfair, uneconomic and called into question the reliability of any deal.”

After the collapse of negotiations, the U.S. imposed new tariffs on a wide array of Canadian goods. Canada will impose its own retaliatory tariffs starting on Sept. 8, Carney said.
Relations between the U.S. and Canada have been tense since Donald Trump took office for a second time in January 2025, with the U.S. president imposing tariffs on Canada and repeatedly threatening to make the country the “51st state.”

The U.S. anthem has in turn been booed at several sporting events in Canada, including MLS games last year.
