The Cleveland Cavaliers are still exploring ways to strengthen their frontcourt as they continue evaluating options on the free-agent and trade markets.
Among the players linked to Cleveland are unrestricted free agents DeMar DeRozan and Jonathan Kuminga, along with Denver Nuggets restricted free agent Peyton Watson.
DeRozan may be the easiest addition. After being waived by the Sacramento Kings, the veteran is already owed $10 million this season, potentially allowing the Cavaliers to sign him for a veteran minimum contract or a portion of their Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception.
Landing Kuminga or Watson would be more complicated. Kuminga is reportedly seeking a deal worth between $15 million and $20 million annually, while Watson would likely require a sign-and-trade because Denver is expected to match any outside offer sheet.
To complete such a deal, Cleveland could use players like Max Strus or Dennis Schroder for salary matching. However, both the Cavaliers and potential trade partners face salary cap, luxury tax and apron restrictions.
Cleveland is also working on a new contract for James Harden. While those negotiations remain ongoing, the organization is using the extra flexibility to explore additional roster upgrades before finalizing Harden’s next deal.
