Sophie Cunningham is one of the most talked-about figures on the hardwood this season. From her viral 22-second finger-pointing stand-off with DeWanna Bonner to her unfiltered commentary on transgender athletes, the Indiana Fever guard consistently draws headlines across social media and packed arenas.
While her gravity is undeniable, her celebrity status often overshadows her skills as a player. The off-court discourse continues to split the WNBA fanbase nationwide, yet a veteran journalist believes that her true value is best measured by her impact on the stat sheet.

Robin Lundberg Weighs In on Sophie Cunningham’s True WNBA Value Beyond the Headlines
Sports media personality Robin Lundberg, a SiriusXM host who also publishes Indiana Fever On SI, has placed Sophie Cunningham at the center of a social media discussion, but for all the good reasons.
“Sophie Cunningham’s celebrity is definitely out of proportion for a player of her caliber. But people acting like she sucks are being completely disingenuous too. She leads the WNBA in 3pt % on 4 attempts per game and should be second for 6th Player of the Year,” wrote Lundberg on X.
The numbers back him up, though the framing depends on the volume filter. Through Aug. 5, Cunningham is averaging 9.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 0.6 steals over 23.1 minutes. She is shooting 88.5% from the stripe, 48.2% from the field, and 45.2% from deep on four attempts per game. That 45.2% is second leaguewide, behind Minnesota‘s Antonia Delaere, who takes fewer than two threes a night. Among high-volume shooters, nobody in the WNBA is more efficient. Teammates Aliyah Boston (44.4%) and Kelsey Mitchell (43.8%) sit right behind her.

Her off-court profile is louder than her production. An ESPN profile published July 21 included her comments on transgender athletes in women’s sports, and her public image took on immediate political weight. Cunningham has since noted the interview itself happened months earlier, near the beginning of 2026.
“I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men,” said Cunningham.
The comments drew responses across the league, including from Seattle‘s Stefanie Dolson, who spoke in support of transgender people before Indiana’s next game, and from researchers who dispute the athletic-advantage premise. The WNBA’s 2026 collective bargaining agreement states that only players who are women are eligible, without defining the term or setting out any public eligibility policy.
Three rallies have been organized in her support, with supporters carrying “Thank you, Sophie” signs and gold balloons shaped like her No. 8. ESPN counted roughly 50 demonstrators at one of them, alongside counterprotesters. The reaction reached the White House.

Lundberg’s argument separates the branding and the culture-war noise from what happens on the floor. That’s a harder split than it sounds, because the same instinct that made her a meme is the one her teammates value. The finger point was a bodyguard move. So was stepping between Clark and Bonner in the first place.
Cunningham came to Indiana in a 2025 multi-team trade after six seasons in Phoenix, tore her MCL that August, and rehabbed through a labor stoppage that nearly cost the league its season. She has come back shooting 45% from three off the bench for the WNBA’s best offense. Whatever anyone thinks of the rest of it, that part is not in dispute.
