Freedom loudly entered the conversation as the debate surrounding Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham‘s comments on trans athletes participating in women’s sports intensified.
Several prominent WNBA figures have taken a different view. Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve and Golden State Valkyries star Gabby Williams have spoken in favor of inclusion, with Williams saying she would welcome a transgender athlete on her team or as an opponent.
Against that backdrop, Freedom waded directly into the middle of the discussion.

The former NBA lottery pick argued that the WNBA’s current rules concerning eligibility, self-identification, and inclusion give him grounds to declare for the league. Freedom’s announcement has now put the WNBA’s existing eligibility language under an even brighter spotlight.
Freedom also received a brief but notable response from Turning Point USA (TPUSA), the conservative organization founded by the late Charlie Kirk.
“Truly inspiring!” TPUSA tweeted.
The reaction adds a political dimension to an issue that had already moved well beyond the basketball court.
At the center of the debate is the language of the WNBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. Article XIII, Section 1(a) states: “Only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.”

The provision establishes the eligibility requirement, but the quoted language itself does not provide a detailed definition of the term “women.” That distinction has become important in the current debate because Kanter is attempting to use the league’s existing framework to support his eligibility claim.
No biological male has played in a WNBA game, but Freedom’s declaration raises a question the league would ultimately have to address: how does the WNBA interpret the term “women” when determining player eligibility?
For now, the WNBA has not publicly provided a more detailed explanation of how that specific CBA language would apply to Kanter’s declaration. As a result, his announcement does not establish that he is eligible to play; it places the question squarely before the league.
Despite the attention surrounding his announcement, Kanter said he did not intend to mock or disrespect anyone involved in the debate.

“I know my presence on the court will stir up strong opinions. I am definitely not here to mock, make fun of, or disrespect any community or personal choices. I’m simply asking that the current rules be applied equally to everyone,” the former NBA journeyman wrote.
Turning Point USA’s response and Kanter’s declaration ensure that the WNBA now faces a question that extends beyond one player’s draft eligibility.
