CJ McCollum emphasized preparation and execution during his practice interview on Wednesday, April 22, as the Atlanta Hawks prepare for Game 3 of their first-round playoff series.
“Yeah, nice to get back in the gym. Go over some things that we could do better. Some things that went well, get some shots up, get ready for another game,” McCollum said.
The Hawks guard pointed to home-court energy as a key factor in the next matchup. “We’re gonna be at home, it’s going to be a great environment. I’m sure the city will be excited.”
He also noted the importance of routine and recovery in a playoff setting. “We’re excited to be home and excited about waking up in our own beds and going through that process of not having to be on the road for four or five days.”
McCollum described the playoff environment as a mix of strategy and execution. “It’s the playoffs, so it’s very competitive. There’s a lot of strategy involved, execution, understanding both teams, each other’s sets and tendencies. It’s just about executing and playing hard.”
When asked about maintaining intensity, he pointed to internal responsibility. “Ownership. We know what’s at stake. We know what needs to be done and look forward to doing it.”
He also referenced Game 2 adjustments and team response. “We did enough to come from behind and get an important victory on the road. It was just about competing at a high level and really focusing in on one possession at a time.”
McCollum stressed consistency across the series. “There’s gonna be ups and downs throughout the series. They’re getting quality looks, just about knocking them down. Staying focused, understanding that a lot of the game is won on the defensive end.”
On Atlanta’s defensive approach, he highlighted communication and discipline. “I’ve been defending Jalen and just kind of getting him off his spots and maybe where he’s comfortable shooting the ball.”
He also discussed physicality and adjustment in playoff basketball. “It’s going to be physical, going to be more half-court oriented. I think he’s continued to adjust and will be himself throughout the rest of the series.”
McCollum addressed leadership and consistency within the locker room. “It’s just about doing things the right way. I have a unique approach and appreciation of the game, appreciation of life. I just try to take advantage of each day.”
He added that control of key fundamentals often determines playoff outcomes. “What you can control is the easiest parts and aspects of the game, which is free throws.”
As the Hawks shift focus to Game 3 at home, McCollum summed up the approach. “We know what’s at stake. Physicality is what it is. We want to get to 2-1. They want to get to 2-1.”
He closed by reinforcing his approach to the postseason mindset. “Every game for me is a game. I’m going to approach it the same way.”
