Clippers’ draft lottery twist leaves Pacers president apologizing to fans

The 2026 NBA Draft Lottery reshaped multiple franchises in one night, but the biggest emotional fallout came from Indiana’s side of the equation. What was supposed to be a reset moment for the Pacers instead turned into a public apology from president Kevin Pritchard after a first-round pick scenario that immediately shifted control to the Los Angeles Clippers.

The lottery results confirmed the Washington Wizards as the No. 1 overall pick winners, while Indiana landed at No. 5 through the Clippers’ pick arrangement. That outcome meant the Pacers missed the top four entirely, triggering the condition that sends their pick to Los Angeles.

Shortly after the lottery, Pritchard addressed fans directly on X with a candid message. He wrote, “I’m really sorry to all our fans. I own taking this risk. Surprised it came up 5th after this year. I thought we were due some luck. But please remember – this team deserved a starting center to compete with the best teams next year. We have always been resilient.”

Indiana entered the night tied for the highest lottery odds at 14%, alongside Washington and Brooklyn, after finishing the 2025-26 season at 19–63. Statistically, the Pacers had a strong path to retain control of their pick, with more than a 50% chance to stay inside the top four.

Instead, the combination of flattened odds pressure and lottery variance pushed them into the exact range that hands the pick to Los Angeles, a franchise that finished 42–40 and is now positioned to benefit from Indiana’s misfortune.

The broader lottery picture added even more weight to the night. Washington secured the No. 1 pick, while Utah, Memphis, and Chicago rounded out the top four. Several teams defied odds, but none faced the direct structural consequence that Indiana did.

Now, attention shifts to the 2026 NBA Draft on June 23–24 at Barclays Center. If the pick officially conveys, Los Angeles will gain a rare top-five selection, while Indiana will be left reflecting on a lottery night defined by probabilities that did not break their way.
