Daniel Rodriguez will make his highly anticipated return to the Octagon this Saturday, headlining UFC Fight Night 283 against Uros Medic in Belgrade, Serbia. This marks his first fight since being released from a Mexican prison in April 2026, where he served eight months for marijuana possession.
Rodriguez, who is on a three-fight winning streak, faces a formidable opponent in the hometown hero Medic, who is also riding a three-fight streak of first-round knockouts.

He claimed he forgot about the 27 grams of cannabis in his backpack, an infraction that Mexican authorities treated as a felony drug smuggling charge.
Rodriguez’s Unprecedented Journey

“There was a moment in time where I wasn’t sure if I was going to get out and be able to continue my career,” Rodriguez told MMA Fighting.
He elaborated on the mental toll of the situation, stating, “It was an emotional roller coaster in there, especially coming off a huge win, the biggest win of my life, and then to be thrown in a jail cell and not knowing what was going to happen.”
The experience forced him to confront his mortality and the potential end of his professional fighting career.

“I was in there with people that are never getting out, and it made me appreciate my life so much more,” he reflected.

Rodriguez’s UFC Main Event Matchup
Now, Rodriguez gets his first UFC main event, a massive opportunity that caps off a remarkable comeback story.

He added, “It’s a main event against a ranked opponent. I’ve been in this position before but never in a main event. Honestly, I’m living my dream.”

Medic, who has finished all his UFC wins by knockout, respects Rodriguez’s durability but plans on adding him to his list of victims (via MMA Junkie):
“He’s made his name in this division. He’s a great fighter and has fought and almost finished some of the really, really good fighters as well,” Medic told MMA Junkie.
He further warned, “I’ve met fighters like that before. I’ve crossed paths with fighters that can take a punch. I come to fight, and every second of that fight is going to be a fight.”

For Rodriguez, getting his hand raised would be a testament to his resilience and the ultimate payoff for the hard work he put in to get back into fighting shape after his release.

Rodriguez has been open about his life and has previously discussed his rough Los Angeles upbringing, including his tattoos and past gang affiliations.
“I’ll never shy away from my past, from my upbringing,” he told Helwani. “If anything, I’m gonna live up to it. In true LA fashion, I’m covered in tattoos; it’s just LA culture, man.”

Though he comes from such a serious and trauma-filled background, Rodriguez joked to MMA Fighting about pitching his life story to Hollywood.
“I’m here now, and days away from one of the biggest fights in my life, and [if] I come out with the victory this Saturday, I’m going to start trying to pitch my story to Hollywood, man,” he stated. “They need to make a movie out of this, bro.”
