ESPN previews Texas A&M’s 2026 Maroon & White Game

by

Texas A&M’s annual Maroon & White Game will now take place at 11:00 a.m on Saturday, April 18, serving as the 15th and final spring practice before the 2026 roster heads into the final three months before fall practice begins in early August. Overall, among the 17 transfer portal additions and 25 of 26 freshmen from the 2026 recruiting class, several newcomers have stood out over the last few weeks.

However, Aggie fans and the national media are looking forward to watching redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed back under center for his third season, and second full starting campaign, and after being voted as one of the Aggies’ five 2026 capatains, the Tennessee native will look to take full advantage of Saturday’s extended scrimmage and find a rhythm with newly formed wide receiver rotation.

On Friday, ESPN released its spring football preview for every Power Conference team, while veteran Texas A&M beat writer Dave Wilson provided his perspective on what to expect from the Aggies on Saturday, starting with his “positions of intrigue” with a clear focus on the wide receiver rotation now featuring Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton and four freshman wideouts from the 2026 class:

“Who will break out at wide receiver this season? Last season, adding KC Concepcion and Mario Craver through the portal dramatically changed the A&M offense because of their big-play potential. The Aggies retained Craver, who had 917 yards last season, but they’ll be looking for someone to replace Concepcion’s 61 catches. The Aggies are very high on Ashton Bethel-Roman, who had 24 catches for 503 yards as a freshman and landed a big target in 6-4 Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton, who had 52 catches for 511 yards and eight TDs last season. Former five-star recruit Terry Bussey, a talented athlete and returner, has yet to make a big impact in the passing game.”

One player Wilson did not mention but deserves more national coverage is freshman wide receiver Aarong Gregory, who has consistently shown out this spring and is expected to play a majority of the second-half snaps, but will hopefully connect with Marcel Reed early in the game.

Defensively, several key players, including defensive backs Dezz Ricks and Bryce Anderson, will miss the spring game, while sophomore edge Marco Jones is my player to watch on defense after recording five sacks during last year’s Maroon & White Game.

Lastly, Wilson feels that Marcel Reed, despite throwing for a career-high 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, will be the primary player to watch on Saturday, and is looking to see if the third-year starter has improved his pocket awareness, ball placement, and overall confidence heading into the most critical year of his playing career.

“Texas A&M’s season ended with Marcel Reed throwing an interception on the goal line, and the quarterback will return for his third season as a starter on a mission after making a leap last season, throwing for 3,169 yards with 25 TDs and 12 interceptions, adding 493 rushing yards and six TDs. Elko said he believes in Reed and thinks he’s ready to carry the Aggies where they want to go.”

Mike Elko’s firm belief in Marcel Reed’s ability to lead the offense was never surprising, knowing that consecutive losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff weren’t completely Reed’s fault, despite the QB throwing four total interceptions in both losses.
