Commonwealth Games, Day Four Prelims: Harrison Turner Looks Sharp in 200 Butterfly
The Monday prelims session at the Commonwealth Games marks the start of the meet’s back half, with the first three days dominated by Australia. The Dolphins have piled up 34 medals at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow, and more hardware is expected to be collected during the final three days of action.
The men’s 100-meter freestyle is the headliner event of the morning, with the Australian trio of Kyle Chalmers, Flynn Southam and Kai Taylor in the field. Chalmers is the reigning Commonwealth Games champion in the event, while Southam clocked a 47.09 outing on the leadoff of the 400 freestyle relay earlier in the meet. As for Taylor, he blistered a 1:44 split in the 800 freestyle relay on Sunday, propelling Australia to gold.
In addition to the men’s 100 freestyle, the Monday prelims will include the men’s 200 butterfly, women’s 400 individual medley, women’s 50 breaststroke, women’s 50 backstroke, women’s 100 breaststroke (SB8) and men’s 100 breaststroke (SB9).
Here is an event-by-event recap of the Day Four prelims:
Men’s 200 Butterfly
The bronze medalist in the 200 butterfly at last summer’s World Championships, Australian Harrison Turner led the way into the final of his main event. Turner supplied a performance of 1:56.47, which was nearly a second quicker than the 1:57.35 of New Zealand’s Lewis Clareburt. Checking in with the third-fastest time of the morning was England’s Ed Mildred, who went 1:57.99. Lurking in fifth is Scotland’s Duncan Scott (1:58.29).
Women’s 400 Individual Medley
Riding the momentum of a gold medal from the European Junior Championships, England’s Amalie Smith was swiftest into the final of the 400 individual medley. Smith was the lone athlete to go under 4:40, as she touched the wall in 4:39.13. An Australian trio occupied the next three positions, led by Jenna Forrester in 4:40.61. She was followed by Tara Kinder (4:41.81) and Ella Ramsay (4:42.75). Forrester was the champion in the 200 backstroke earlier in the meet, and also took bronze in the 400 freestyle.
