Jalen Duren did not hide where he stands on a possible long-term deal with the Detroit Pistons. The 22-year-old center said he would welcome a max extension this summer if the team puts it on the table.
“God willing, man. God willing. If they bring that to me, I’ll be more than happy,” Duren said on All The Smoke podcast, via HoopsHype. “But I think, like you said, it was just betting on myself.”
Duren’s comments come at the end of a breakthrough season that helped power Detroit to the top of the Eastern Conference at 60-22. The Pistons open their first-round series Sunday against the Orlando Magic, but contract questions are already part of the bigger picture around one of the league’s fastest-rising frontcourts.
The 2025-26 season was Duren’s strongest yet. He averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and shot 65.0% from the field in 70 starts, giving Detroit a reliable interior anchor on both ends.
That production matters because Duren is in the final year of a four-year, $19 million rookie scale deal. His leap has changed the negotiation landscape after a season that placed him among the Pistons’ most important players.
Duren said the earlier lack of an extension was not a sign of conflict. “I don’t think the team did anything wrong,” he said. “I think they were in one place mentally, and I was in another. We just couldn’t come to an agreement at that time.”
The tone now is clearly more optimistic. “Hopefully this summer we’ll be able to get something done,” Duren said, signaling that both sides could revisit the conversation once Detroit’s playoff run is complete.
For the Pistons, the timing is important. Duren’s rebounding, finishing and rim pressure fit cleanly next to Cade Cunningham, who averaged 23.9 points and 9.9 assists, and Detroit’s young core has turned into a 60-win group.
The playoff stage now gives Duren another chance to strengthen his case even further. Detroit’s path this spring may decide more than just a series outcome; it could shape the franchise’s next major financial commitment.
