Jalen Duren enters the offseason as the NBA’s top remaining restricted free agent, but his contract talks with the Detroit Pistons have become more challenging.
The 22-year-old center earned All-NBA Third Team honors after a breakout regular season, yet Fred Katz of The Athletic reports that his disappointing playoff performance has complicated extension discussions.
Detroit also benefits from holding the right of first refusal on any offer sheet Duren might receive, while the lack of teams with available cap space has further strengthened the Pistons’ negotiating position.
Still, the big man retains one significant option: accepting his qualifying offer and testing unrestricted free agency next summer, a move that could reshape the balance of negotiations.
Duren has spent his first four NBA seasons in Detroit, posting career averages of 13.5 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 276 regular-season games.
He has also been selected to one All-Star Game.
