Jalen Johnson emphasized pace and possession control as the Atlanta Hawks prepare for Game 3 of their first-round series tied 1-1, speaking during practice on Wednesday, April 22.
“I think just continue to play fast. Try to keep them off balance on both ends of the floor,” Johnson said when asked about holding home court.
He pointed to rebounding and possession value as a defining factor in the series. “Continue to close our possessions. If we continue to win the possession game, we’re going to have more chances and opportunities to get out and run and play to our strengths.”
Atlanta returns home after splitting the first two games in New York, a result Johnson viewed as an important baseline. “That’s something you always want to do when you’re on the road the first two games, try to get one.”
The Hawks forward also highlighted the impact of teammates stepping up in key moments. “CJ had a hell of a game and he really put us on his shoulders tonight, and we all can still continue to get better.”
Johnson noted the importance of home environment momentum heading into Game 3. “We’re playing at home. That’s going to give us more juice, more energy, and we’re excited about that.”
He also stressed how playoff series create room for growth within a team structure. “It’s giving us room to grow, continue to learn more about ourselves and each other. It’s been a good first two games and we’re just excited to continue to grow.”
Atlanta’s defensive adjustments have centered on limiting transition opportunities for the opponent. “That’s obviously a point of emphasis for them, trying to stop our transition game. But at the end of the day, it’s basketball. You just got to continue to try to counter that.”
Johnson acknowledged the need for offensive balance in response. “Try to continue to play to your strengths. If we win more of those rebounds and close out those possessions, it’ll give us more opportunities.”
He also addressed his own offensive rhythm and decision-making. “It’s a flow of the game, but also understanding that I do need to be more aggressive in certain situations and understanding when and where to attack on the floor and all my spots.”
Johnson underlined the importance of home-court confidence after earning a split on the road. “Coming back home knowing you’re playing in front of your fans and playing in an arena you’re comfortable in, it’s exciting.”
