Klay Thompson’s future with the Mavericks is uncertain after Dallas finished Sunday with its second straight season outside the playoffs, according to Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News.

Thompson still has one year remaining on the three-year deal he signed in 2024 after leaving Golden State, but his fit with a team now shifting toward a rebuild is unclear.

When Thompson joined Dallas, the franchise was coming off a Finals appearance, and he envisioned competing alongside Luka Doncic.

However, the unexpected trade of Doncic and the emergence of rookie Cooper Flagg as the team’s new focal point have changed the outlook, potentially making Thompson a trade candidate this summer.

“I’m not sure,” Thompson said Sunday when asked if he expects to remain with the team. “I’m under contract so I do, but I’ve definitely learned in my time in Dallas that things can change on a dime.”

Even in a reduced role, Thompson remained effective this season, averaging 11.7 points in 69 games while shooting 38.3% from three-point range.

He also reached the 200 three-pointer mark for the 11th time in his career after knocking down four in Sunday’s win over Chicago.

Any decision regarding Thompson’s future will likely come after Dallas hires a new general manager.

In the meantime, he’s focused on appreciating his time on the court.

“I have been very grateful to be here and to make it through the season healthy,” Thompson said. “I know my years are numbered going forward so every night in an NBA jersey, I take full advantage of it.”
