Sabrina Ionescu recently re-signed with the New York Liberty on a multi-year contract, underscoring her loyalty and eagerness to bring a second title to the Big Apple.

Helping her achieve it is first-year coach Chris DeMarco, who replaced Sandy Brondello in November. It was a surprise move by the Liberty, considering Brondello just steered the team to its first title in 2024.

Although New York was upset by the Phoenix Mercury in the first round of last season’s playoffs, it was expected that Brondello would keep her job. Alas, the front office had other plans.

According to WNBA reporter Khristina Williams, DeMarco is already simplifying the Liberty’s overall system, relying more on execution and speed. Ionsecu said she is all for it.

“We have kind of just made it really plain and simple on what we’re trying to do on both sides of the ball, and I think that allows you to be more physical. I think when you’re overthinking, you’re a little bit passive,” said Ionsecu, as quoted by Williams.

“The clarity has really helped us understand what we want to do on the defensive end, how we can use our length to our advantage.”

The 28-year-old guard added that she has already seen improvements as they continue to buy into DeMarco’s game plan.

“I’ve been able to see that in the first few days of training camp, and I think it’s just gonna continue to get better,” said Ionescu.

She averaged 18.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and 1.3 steals last season, earning her fourth selection to the All-WNBA Second Team.

With the prolific trio of Ionsecu, Breanna Stewart, and Jonquel Jones re-signing in the offseason and DeMarco instilling a different approach, the Liberty are very serious about reclaiming their throne.
