Former Miami Heat guard Mario Chalmers believes LeBron James’ free agency will ultimately come down to two Eastern Conference contenders, identifying the Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers as the strongest destinations for his former teammate.
Speaking with Mark Medina of Fadeaway World, Chalmers said Miami and Philadelphia stand above the rest of the field because both organizations are positioned to compete for a championship immediately.
“It’s hard to say,” Chalmers said when asked where James would play next. “But I think it’s between Miami and Philly. Those are my two top choices.”
Chalmers acknowledged that the Golden State Warriors remain a possibility, but he believes James is more likely to return to the Eastern Conference.
“I feel like Golden State is a good option. But I just don’t see him staying in the West right now with the East wide open,” Chalmers said.
His comments come as James’ future remains one of the NBA offseason’s biggest unresolved storylines. ESPN’s Shams Charania recently reported that the Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and 76ers currently appear to be ahead of Golden State in the race for the four-time NBA champion after the Warriors’ pursuit of another star stalled.
Chalmers was particularly enthusiastic about Philadelphia’s roster construction following the franchise’s blockbuster acquisition of Jaylen Brown. The 76ers traded Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round selections to the Boston Celtics for Brown, creating a new core featuring Brown, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
According to Chalmers, adding James would elevate that trio into arguably the league’s premier collection of star talent.
“With Philly, I see him fitting perfectly with Jaylen Brown, Maxey and Joel Embiid,” Chalmers said. “You have a ‘Big 4’ there. ‘Bron can play in that 3 or 4 position and also take Maxey off the ball.”
Philadelphia also strengthened its supporting cast this summer by signing Dean Wade, Anfernee Simons and Ariel Hukporti while selecting Alabama guard Labaron Philon Jr. with the 22nd overall pick. After finishing 45-37 last season, the Sixers defeated Boston in the first round before being swept by the eventual champion New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Chalmers also believes Miami offers an attractive basketball fit after its franchise-altering trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Heat acquired Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from the Milwaukee Bucks earlier this month, pairing the two-time MVP with Bam Adebayo to create one of the NBA’s strongest defensive frontcourts. Miami later signed Tim Hardaway Jr. to add perimeter shooting, although Chalmers believes more spacing is still needed.
“With Miami, I see LeBron being a starting point guard with Bam and Giannis,” Chalmers said. “They just got to get a couple of more shooters.”
He added that specialists such as Duncan Robinson or Klay Thompson would further strengthen Miami’s title chances by creating additional floor spacing around Antetokounmpo and Adebayo.
Chalmers, who won two NBA championships alongside James in Miami, also praised the organization’s aggressive offseason.
“I loved it,” Chalmers said of the Giannis trade. “I’m ‘Heat Nation’ for life.”
While he admitted Minnesota would be an exciting destination because of Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball, Chalmers ultimately questioned whether the Timberwolves’ young roster fits James’ timeline. He also expressed skepticism about a Cleveland reunion because of the assets the Cavaliers would likely have to move to create room for James.
