The Spartans recruiting train never ends—and it shouldn’t. The future is now in East Lansing, and the building blocks are being set every single day. Getting foundational pieces now sets the stage for what could be on the horizon for Pat Fitzgerald and all of Michigan State.
Michigan State’s latest move on the recruiting trail comes with an offer extended to three-star linebacker Rome Ewell.

Ewell is a three-star linebacker out of Springtown High School in Springtown, Texas. Listed at 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, he plays with impressive speed and a high football IQ.
He looks like Sunshine from Remember the Titans, but plays like Thor, the Norse god.
Ewell put together a massive junior campaign in 2025, finishing with 148 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, four sacks, and one fumble recovery, according to 247Sports.
Before that, as a sophomore, he appeared in 11 games and totaled 65 tackles, four tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and a 31-yard scoop-and-score fumble recovery.
Heading into his senior season, Ewell holds an 86 rating per 247Sports. That places him as the No. 88 linebacker in the 2027 class and the No. 131 overall prospect out of Texas.

His composite score sits at 0.8600, ranking him No. 1,043 nationally, the No. 95 linebacker in the class, and No. 132 in the state of Texas.
Michigan State now joins a long list of programs that have extended offers to Ewell. That group includes Houston, Dartmouth, UTEP, Tulsa, Texas State, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana, UTSA, North Texas, Memphis, Georgia State, Arkansas State, Kansas State, Arizona State, Iowa State, Boston College and Louisville.
Simply put, there is no shortage of programs looking to land a fast linebacker with great size and even better instincts. Because of that, Michigan State will have to work to stand out.

The Spartans’ linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator Max Bullough has already connected with Ewell. Based on Ewell’s social media post, the conversation went very well, as he shared that he felt “blessed” to receive the offer following their talk.
Bullough epitomizes what it means to be a Spartan. He brings intensity, passion, and a clear expectation of success. After coming over from Notre Dame, Bullough seems eager to prove what he can do at Michigan State and help reignite the fire in East Lansing.
That process doesn’t just start with the current roster—it starts with building for the future. That’s where a player like Ewell comes in.
The Spartans already have seven commitments in their 2027 class, but none are linebackers. As Bullough looks to establish the foundation of “Linebacker U” in East Lansing, Michigan State becomes an intriguing destination for any linebacker with NFL aspirations.

Ewell certainly won’t lack opportunities at the next level. With so many programs in pursuit, Michigan State will have to separate itself from a crowded field to secure his commitment.
Ewell is fast—and offers are coming in even faster. Now that Michigan State has entered the mix, it’ll be worth watching how his recruitment unfolds throughout the year.
